Which President Screwed Us?

But here are 25 of the worst actions, in no particular order, committed by American Presidents since 1981. Can you correctly guess which President did what?

The answers may surprise you…

  1. Vetoed the Fairness Doctrine, allowing the media to pick and choose favorites rather than provide equal airtime to political candidates.
  2. Applied economic sanctions that starved 500,000 Iraqi children to death.
  3. Bombed four unprovoked countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Somolia.
  4. Bombed seven unprovoked countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somolia, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Pakistan.
  5. Pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol which set requirements for 38 nations to lower greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change, saying that abiding by the agreement would “harm our economy and hurt our workers.”
  6. Approved the CIA’s use of torture and rendition.
  7. Bombed a Sudanese pharmaceutical plant, wrongly claiming it was being used to produce nerve gas. This plant had provided 50% of Sudan’s medicine and was the main source of their anti-malaria drugs. Ten of thousands died as a result.
  8. Supported a trade agreement that would allow corporations to sue the government over regulations that reduced their profits.
  9. Repealed Glass Steagal, deregulating the Big Banks. This allowed them to blur the lines between commercial and investment banking, the primary cause of the Great Recession.
  10. Approved the sale of 130 tons of uranium to Iran, enough to build 10 nuclear bombs.
  11. Provided weapons and training for Osama bin Laden and the Taliban to fight Russian forces in Afghanistan.
  12. Pledged to “end welfare as we know it” and proceeded to sign the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, which increased the number of impoverished families with children by 17% and increased overall poverty by 50%.
  13. Repealed the Mental Health Systems Act, cutting federal funding by 30% and eliminating 40,000 hospital beds for mental health patients. This in turn led to an increase in homelessness, incarceration, and emergency room overflow.
  14. Provided weapons to ISIS and Al-Qaeda to overthrow a democratically-elected dictator in Syria.
  15. Used a drone strike to kill a 16-year old American citizen in Yemen.
  16. Signed the Telecommunications Act, which opened the floodgates for corporate mergers. This is why 90% of the media (television, newspapers, film, and radio) is controlled by only six companies today.
  17. Deported 3.2 million illegal immigrants, more than all other previous U.S. Presidents combined.
  18. Armed and trained the Contra terrorist army to overthrow the Nicaraguan government. The Contras then kidnapped, tortured, raped, and executed civilians, including children. 50,000 people were killed. The International Court of Justice found his Administration guilty of encouraging widespread crimes against humanity. There were no consequences.
  19. Appointed a person to lead the Dept of Education who had previously closed dozens of public schools and supported privatizing K-12.
  20. Received a memo warning about Osama bin Laden plan to attack the U.S. by hijacking commercial airplanes. Did absolutely nothing to prevent it.
  21. Doubled the number of incarcerated Americans, an increase faster than any other President, with a crime bill that imposed mandatory minimum sentencings, expanded the death penalty, and reduced trials.
BONUS: Can you name the Senator that helped draft that crime bill?
  22. Brought the tax rate for the wealthy down from 77% to 27%, rapidly increasing income inequality.
  23. Created the offshore military prison at Guantanamo Bay and secret detention sites in eastern Europe to avoid domestic and military justice systems.
  24. Expanded the power of the NSA to share globally intercepted personal communications with the government’s 16 other intelligence agencies before applying privacy protections, including satellite transmissions, phone calls and emails.
  25. Signed off on giving the military the power to arrest and hold Americans by suspending the writ of habeas corpus, a key protection provided by the U.S. Constitution that prevents the government from holding a person indefinitely without showing cause.
